March 2023

We have made it March, and been rewarded with glorious bulbs, scents and longer days. The blue skies have been energising, so much so, that we have embarked on the Spring-cleaning agenda here in the cottages. Windows wide open and fresh air drifting through, refreshing the pretty rooms.

Hurrah!

We have made it March, and been rewarded with glorious bulbs, scents and longer days. The blue skies have been energising, so much so, that we have embarked on the Spring-cleaning agenda here in the cottages. Windows wide open and fresh air drifting through, refreshing the pretty rooms.

We leave organic candles in the homes for guests to use, this month we have made natural beeswax candles, I have been storing the beeswax sheets in bags with fresh herbs to absorb the fragrance. These candles are best stored in the fridge, so that they burn slower, the pure beeswax eases allergy symptoms by producing negative ions to cleanse the atmosphere, producing no soot and zero chemical compounds, perfect for the dinner table.

Our low waste living continues here, we are really keeping our 2023 resolution at the top of our daily agenda. We are madly recycling everything we possibly can. Whilst we are in the leanest of self-sufficient months in the produce gardens, we use Riverford for our guest produce, all packaging is compostable, we love Riverford.

The full moon is the plough moon this month, helping with seed germination in the glasshouses, awakening the dawn chorus and reminding us that we really are heading towards the glorious springtime.

World Water Day is also celebrated this month, we are fortunate here at Compton, as our water is all spring fed and treated by ultraviolet lights, no chemicals. It is fresh and clear with no taste of fluoride, cool and refreshing to drink.

Our salad leaves and fresh salad herbs are plentiful already, the mustard leaves are spicy and warming to the taste. The tomato plants are up and pushing away in their pots, cucumbers threatening to follow.

Tomorrow, we start cleaning off the garden furniture, removing the winter cobwebs, ready to put out in the cottage gardens, it is hard to think that we will ever need parasols to protect us from the sunshine, but we will, and these too will soon be placed in the middle of tables, in readiness for alfresco eating with family or friends, and definitely doggies!

Oh, I nearly forgot to mention the fabulous Mother’s Day cards we have sourced on Etsy. They are plantable seed paper cards, bury in the soil after use & watch them grow a magical reminder of special life is…. Happy March.
