The original Plantsman’s home within the Compton Castle Estate. Like an old stone gingerbread cottage. Standing in a quiet corner of the village of Compton Pauncefoot. Views of the surrounding estate & hundreds of hectares of ancient rural farmland.

Nursery Cottage is in the village of Compton Pauncefoot. As the name suggests, it was the Nurseryman’s Cottage, when the Estate used to grow just about everything in the big glasshouses that are adjacent to the cottage. We still grow roses in the glasshouses; right into the winter, you will find them in jugs waiting for you inside the Nursery cottage!

The original cottage had fallen into disrepair & this replacement was built around 45 years ago from golden stone quarried on the estate. Nursery Cottage is approached through a wooden five-bar gate onto a private driveway, there is an oak-framed double open front garage & an enclosed garden to the rear. The garden is a peaceful garden planted in a white theme.

This lovely home has a botanical theme running through it, echoing its heritage. The colour scheme is broadly grey neutrals, with vivid blue & white ceramics throughout. Antique Delft pottery adorns windowsills & the mantlepiece. The kitchen & adjoining breakfast room have wood flooring, with large full patio doors to the front garden, antique pine furniture with seating for six guests, it has a huge old table, useful for meetings too.

There is a downstairs cloakroom in the rear hallway and a back door to the garden.

The other reception rooms & bedrooms are all carpeted. The sitting room has antique re-upholstered grey velvet soft furnishings and a pretty circular glass-topped table with chairs in front of a set of French doors leading into the garden, perfect for formal dining, games/jigsaw puzzles etc. The smart TV is at the other end of the room, next to the baby-sized wood burner. Several drinks tables & reading lamps/soft lighting.

Fully integrated kitchen appliances, an electric Rangemaster ceramic hob with dark grey stone work surfaces & a small breakfast area with high bar stools. Beautiful handcrafted ceramics line the open shelves for alfresco dining. A canteen of vintage Silver Cutlery is in a box on the dresser, for really special dinner treats. Dining linens are all coordinated.

There are sunbathing areas & a dining area outside, with a cast iron brazier for outside fires and wild grilling.

Upstairs are three good-sized cottage bedrooms, the master has a big Antique Victorian super king bed & an ensuite shower bathroom, a small TV & beautiful sunset views to the West over farmland. The second bedroom has a kingsized bed & separate dressing room/storage room adjacent to the bedroom. The third bedroom has a pair of antique beds (very Downton Abbey!) &  fitted wardrobe. The family bathroom has a bathtub & overhead shower fitting. There is a large airing cupboard on the landing. Wooden stair gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.

The en suite to the master bedroom has a simple shower room with walk in shower whilst there’s a family bathroom with bath and overhead shower. Both have heated rails to keep towels warm and fluffy.

Nursery Cottage is surrounded by its own private gardens, which are essentially laid to lawn and planted as a peace garden, with white plants, shrubs & floral displays. The cottage is approached via a wooden five-bar gate leading onto a surfaced driveway with an oak-framed open-car garage.

Sunbathing areas & a dining area outside, with a cast iron brazier for outside fires and wild grilling.

The garden is fenced on several sides, and a thick natural hedgerow forms one side of the fencing.

Nursery Cottage enjoys a quiet, rural setting, within beautiful countryside – much loved by the people who live in it. Due to its peaceful location, we kindly ask our guests to maintain the tranquil setting to respect our neighbours’ peace and privacy.

Nursery Cottage has Wi-Fi so if you need to stay in touch with the outside world you can.

There is plenty of private parking in front of the cottage. Additionally, an oak framed double open garage is on the driveway to keep cars cool and dry.

This stunning retreat is also home to a large collection of original, one-of-a-kind antiques including furniture, crystal, china and silverware. Whilst we know our guests always take the utmost care in our retreats, in the unlikely event that something gets broken, any breakages will need to be paid for – thank you.
