The only thing you’ll be taught in this gorgeous, idyllic homestay for six is how to relax and unwind – and where the only lesson is playtime! Step through this gorgeous, sandstone home and you’ll find a breath-takingly bright, light retreat exquisitely furnished with thoughtfully chosen antiques blended beautifully with luxurious modern touches – such as a fabulous spa room with sauna. With plenty of light-filled rooms in which to relax and unwind, this is a fabulous holiday retreat for larger families, a group of friends or even a couple wanting extra space – the ultimate luxury.

Inspired by William Morris and the Arts & Crafts Movement, wallpaper and soft furnishings abound by William Morris. You’ll also discover antique, original pieces of furniture by the famous Robert Mouseman. Nestled in the glorious Somerset countryside in the quintessential country village of Compton Pauncefoot, this is a great base from which to explore this stunning yet often overlooked area.

School House has a circular rattan-glazed dining table in the courtyard just outside the porch to the cottage. Six rattan armchairs are situated around the table.

The seat cushions are stored in the utility room/outside w/c just off the courtyard. Inside is a beautiful Mouseman antique table in the kitchen and six retro Italian leather dining chairs around the table. Tableware, napkins and table linens for both inside and outside use are stored in the kitchen drawers.

A canteen of silver cutlery ( not dishwasher proof) is stored in the larder unit. Regular silverware is in the kitchen drawers. The colour scheme through School House is Grey, with seasonal colour accents that we change.

The kitchen is large and painted in Farrow & Ball downpipe grey. There is a British heritage cooker similar to an Aga. In Black with chrome lids.

The fridge & freezer are under counter and integral to the kitchen. The dishwasher is also integral to the right of the kitchen sink.

The electrical storage cupboard housing the Sonos speaker, Kenwood chef, nutribullet, food processor, and Nespresso machine is in a modern concealed touch white cupboard, just press the door and it releases.

Around the corner on the end of the under-stairs area is a full-height larder cupboard. Additional vintage Dining pieces are stored safely on the top shelf, with more casual dining china stored in the kitchen cupboards.

The work surfaces are all white quartz with flecks of silver glistening in the sunshine. A small wood burner is in the fireplace in the kitchen for romantic dinners.

All of the bedrooms are upstairs in School House. The staircase rises from the kitchen, carpeted in dark grey woolen carpets throughout the upstairs areas. With handmade wooden stargazes top & bottom of the stairs to keep babies safe and doggies on the hard wooden floors downstairs.

The master suite overlooks the rear garden, with a large upholstered coordinating roman blind. The kingsize bed has an antique Moroccan headboard, with coordinating antique lamps. A full size giant Gothic shaped mirror on one wall. Fitted wardrobes with shelving inside. A small en suite shower room with basin, wc & heated towel rail complete the master suite.

The second bedroom is approached down shallow steps, this room has a large upholstered roman blind & over looks the village church down the distant valley. It has king-sized modern grey sleigh bed, small fitted wardrobe and original fireplace.

The final bedroom over looks the rear garden, it is a twin bedroom, with two matching antique cast iron beds. The decor in this room is all Designers Guild, the wallpaper and fabric all coordinate and the lambrequin over the window was especially designed, it is very special! This room has the airing cupboard and fitted wardrobes, all wallpapered too.

Inside the cottage is the ensuite shower room as previously described, additionally a family bathroom with full sized bath and shower over the bath. Fitted cabinetry and basin, wc.

Downstairs in the courtyard is a utility room, which was the original school outhouse, the wc remains today.

Next door is a spa room, hosting a sauna, shower and basis, with heated towel rail.

The gardens at School House wrap around the cottage. To the front a gate links or separate the properties, useful if two groups are staying who are linked. The rear garden gate is the gate you arrive at, reached from the driveway.

The pathway is illuminated down the two steps into the courtyard, where the spa room, utility room and seating area can be found. The porch is a useful space for coats and boots and dogs!

In the summer months rattan sun beds are on the lawn, with a coffee table. The mattresses are stored in the porch on top of the Victorian coat hanging rail.

A russet apple tree in in the centre of the lawn, with a huge cedar tree at the bottom of the garden for shade. Original flower beds have herbs and shrubs growing. Cretian terracotta pots with topiary domes are on the terrace.

School House is adjoined to the Old School, they were historically one village building. Perfect for two linked families staying.

Situated in the centre of the village. The village is pretty and quiet, with a stunning church. Many walks on footpaths and bridleways locally.

School House has Fibre optic BT broadband, smart tv & good internet.

Access to School House is from a private driveway and shared oak framed triple garage.

Generally, two vehicles will fit in the garage/on the driveway for each neighbouring house.

School House is also home to a collection of one-of-a-kind antiques, including furniture, ceramics & silverware.

Please enjoy them, some are purely for display use & would be hard to replace if broken. They are up high away from dogs & children! Breakages/damage would have to be paid for by the guests.

The Compton Estate is eco-friendly. We produce our own spring-filtered water, solar panels provide electricity & we recycle as much as we can. We collect the recycling & place it outside for collection on Thursdays unless it is a bank holiday week when the collection alters. We ask that food packaging is rinsed out before being placed in the containers so that pests are not too attracted to the collection area on the lane outside.

Please place food in the brown lined container. Vegetable peelings can be placed in the bucket for composting. Our actual rubbish bins are only collected for landfill once a month, so recycling is essential.

We use eco-cleaning products for our excess water drainage. Recycled loo rolls and kitchen roll. Put coffee grounds from the cafetière into the flower beds, the plants love it & the gardener digs it into the soil, or in the compost bin. We use Grind compostable coffee pods. Do jot down your eco recommendations in the house book; we love to adopt guest ideas!

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at The Old School, generally one larger dog or two smaller dogs. Please don’t leave them alone in the house or garden. Do clean up after them in the garden.

We also ask that you keep them on the hard floor areas, as muddy feet are best cleaned up from non carpeted areas.

The Miele pet hoover is in the understaff cupboard as is the mop for any accidents! Livestock grazes in the areas with public footpaths, and please keep dogs on a lead if you see animals grazing.
