Historic Castellated Gothic Lodge House situated within the village of Compton Pauncefoot, on the Southerly aspect to Compton Castle. Nestled peacefully into woodland, with its own private secure driveway & gardens.

Pull up to this beauty and you’ll instantly fall in love: with a turret made for a princess, gorgeous windows with stained glass and oodles of character, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re in a medieval abode, rather than one built in the early 18th century.

Part of the incredible Compton Castle on the Somerset/Dorset border, the lodge lies within the estate, but is privately contained from the main areas for security and your privacy. Please note that the grounds are private property.

Lakes, woodland and gardens can be explored from the footpaths directly outside the entrance to Windsor Lodge whilst the views to the Glastonbury Tor and King Alfred’s Tower at Stourhead are incredible.

The lodge itself is a unique opportunity to stay within the estate and offers a warm welcome, immense privacy and is a characterful home stay complimented perfectly with the best of modern design and comforts.

You enter Windsor Lodge onto old flag stones which lead onto a polished oak floored dining room, with an antique pine table, seating six. Modern sleek white chairs add a quirky modern contrast to the feel of the dining room. There is an antique pine dresser housing a mixture of stunning vintage cornishware in shades of yellow & green. Tableware is stored in the drawers beneath, with linen napkins and coordinating placemats for setting the dining table. On the wall is old fitted pine shelving which displays original yellow cornishware dating from 1900, it is very rare indeed!

In the kitchen there are four more chairs seated at a breakfast style low bar area, so you can chat to the chef! Outside there is a glazed dining table and six armchairs, additionally an antique Gustavian bench underneath the veranda.

All of the bedrooms are upstairs at Windsor Lodge. The staircase is carpeted along with the upstairs landing and bedrooms, in a light cream wool carpet. We have placed handmade permanent stair gates at the top & bottom of the staircase, so it is safe for babies & keeps any doggies off the cream carpets!

The master bedroom has a kingsize mahogany sleigh bed & Georgian tallboy with a beautiful antique cheval mirror. The bedroom has stunning original stained glass windows in both the bedroom & bathroom, large fitted wardrobes & an en suite bathroom with large shower, overlooking the rear garden.

The smallest room, sleeps one guest, it has a fitted wardrobe & views across the fields, enjoying the sunsets over the Glastonbury Tor in the distance.

The last bedroom upstairs is in the main turret, the room is hexagonal with an antique kingsize bed, tiny original leaded light windows overlooking the farmland, a walking mini turret wardrobe. An antique dressing table & mirror.

The linens are mostly French by Yves Delorme, all beautiful high thread count cottons, freshly laundered & pressed by hand. A large double airing cupboard houses garden cushions and blankets for cooler evenings if required.

Two bathrooms are both upstairs at Windsor Lodge. The en suite that serves the principle bedroom, is private and accessed through the bedroom, it has a large shower with  original tall heated towel rail, basin & WC. Oak flooring, stained glass window, with blind that overlooks the gardens at the rear of the lodge.

The family bathroom over looks farmland to the front of the Lodge, again with a blind covering the larger window, which is mullioned in stone & original. A full sized bath with shower over the top. Oak flooring, basin and WC. Heated towel rail. There are bath robes hanging in each bathroom, if required.

Downstairs in the main entrance there is a cloakroom with WC and basin, additionally an original locked gun safe, our house keeper has the key for safety- if required.

The Windsor Lodge kitchen is modern, light and airy in feel. High white gloss with no protruding door handles and a white quartz work surface flecked with silver crystals, it gleams in the sunshine! The colour scheme of the kitchen is green & yellow. Everything coordinates, the china is all vintage Whittard, which we collect when china search companies alert us to new listings. It is retro & stylish.

Le Cruset earthen ware in green and yellow & serving dishes in generous amounts. Pans for the rangemaster hob, including a big 3 tier steamer.

In the electrical cupboard under the stairs you will find a large Kenwood Chef food mixer, nutribullet, digital scales, Sonos speaker, blender and attachments. In the separate larder under the stairs you will find a canteen of silver cutlery for special dinners, in addition to the regular dishwasher proof silverware. The fridge & freezer are both under counter & integral behind the doors. In the outside boot room, you will find an additional fridge for wine etc, plus a washing machine. With an old fashioned laundry maid hanging, to dry anything wet. The boiler is located in this room, it is warm & excellent for drying out wet weather clothing and footwear.

The gardens at Windsor Lodge are all original and established. Although a large commanding conifer hedge has been removed to allow a view over the parkland surrounding the actual castle, and the large deep lake. You can hear the water in quiet moments. But the Windsor garden is all securely fenced off so it is safe for children and guests dogs, as the huge lake is deep and unfenced. There is an original Lodge veranda with antique Gustavian bench underneath it, an original meat/cheese safe fixed to the wall- perfect for the smelly cheese!

A spiral washing line for laundry use. An outside cast iron large brazier is on the stone terrace for cookouts and fire pits, with seasoned logs and British charcoal for cooking. The tools if required for cooking are in a large sealed container in the boot room. English local charcoal is available. Additional supplies can be purchased from the village shop in Charlton Horethorne.

Various fauna grows in the season, including herbs and an old fig tree. There are steps leading from the driveway to the entrance door, which is flanked by two oversized urns. The boot room is accessed from outside on the terrace, the recycling is kept in here too.

The lawn has a slope to part of it. The entrance to Windsor Lodge is above the property, you take the private drive past the Lodge and enter via the large set of locked green gate at the top. The lock box is on the post of the gates. There is a garage, which is original and part of the Grade II* listing of the Lodge.

Windsor Lodge is tucked away on the outer fringes of the village of Compton Pauncefoot. It is rurally situated amidst woodland, with no neighbours aside from the main Castle which is within the private parkland alongside the Lodge. It is a Grade II* listed property with many original Regency attributes, including the mullioned windows and glass. It does not have any modern glazing.

Life at Windsor Lodge is designed to be a mixture of outdoors meets indoors, a stable door on the entrance invites all smells and sounds into the home.

The village is tiny, the nearest pub is a mile away, a lovely walk. There is a fabulous local farm shop about a mile away too, it really is gorgeous with a great cafe, butchery and wine, cider & beer section, milk bank for refills, heavenly bakery, beautiful locally sourced produce.

The Wifi at Windsor Lodge is a private source, as we are too far off the beaten track to get BT Wifi. The supply is fibre optic & travels underground to Windsor Lodge from an independent private supply. It generally works well & has a good download speed for the smart TV & internet.

Parking at Windsor Lodge is on a private gated travelled driveway, reached once the large double set of green gates are unlocked, with the key inside the lock box.

The lock box is attached to the gate post. You will need to use your car headlights to see if you are arriving in the darkness, as Windsor Lodge is situated rurally in woodland & from the outside it is dark. Once inside the gates there are lights on the property & downlight on the gravel path from the driveway to the Lodge itself.

Please shut thee gates once you are inside the driveway to stop the wild deer from eating the plants in the garden!

The garage will accommodate one car and the driveway an additional two cars. Please do not park outside the gates & block the access up into the woods.

Windsor Lodge is also home to a collection of one-of-a-kind antiques, including furniture, ceramics & silverware. Please enjoy them, some are purely for display use & would be hard to replace if broken. They are generally up high away from dogs & children! Breakages/damage would have to be paid for by the guests.

The Compton Estate is eco-friendly. We produce our own spring filtered water, solar panels provide electricity & we recycle as much as we can. We collect the recycling & place it outside for collection on Thursdays, unless it is a bank holiday week, when the collection alters. We ask that food packaging is rinsed out before being placed in the containers, so that pests are not too attracted to the collection area on the lane outside.

Please place food in the brown lined container. Vegetable peelings can be placed in the bucket for composting. Our actual rubbish bins are only collected for land fill once a month, so recycling is essential.

We use eco cleaning products for our excess water drainage. Recycled loo rolls and kitchen roll. Put coffee grounds from the cafetière into the flower beds, the plants love it & the gardener digs it into the soil, or in the compost bin. We use Grind compostable coffee pods. Do jot down your eco recommendations in the house book, we love to adopt guest ideas!

Well behaved dogs are welcome at Windsor Lodge, generally one larger dog or two smaller dogs. Please don’t leave them alone in the house or garden. Do clean up after them in the garden. We also ask that you keep them downstairs on the hard floor areas, as muddy feet are best cleaned up from non carpeted areas.

The Miele pet hoover is in the upstairs cupboard by the turret bedroom, the mop is in the outside boot room. Livestock grazes in the areas with public footpaths, please keep dogs on a lead if you see animals grazing.

“We can’t speak highly enough about our stay at Windsor Lodge. It’s a unique property which we found spotlessly clean, beautifully renovated and comfortably furnished. The garden is lovely and you can walk from the property to several pubs, though we wouldn’t recommend doing that after dark!”

“Great and unique accommodation in a lovely, private location. Well equipped and very comfortable – a great base from which to explore the surrounding areas. The nearest local is a 25 minute walk – you should take a torch if making the trip in the autumn/winter months in the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and our dog loved the secure garden. Welcome basket went down a treat too!!”
