Sustainability

Sustainability of Compton Estates

The team at Compton Castle Estate share an overwhelming ethos when it comes to sustainability. We are galvanized by ethical practice & reducing our carbon footprint as much as we possibly can.

Deep within our desire to put the environment foremost & be respectful of that, as we welcome you to our holiday homes here on this countryside estate.

We source as much as possible locally, the farmstead shop Teals in South Cadbury is amazing & we buy your milk there in refillable glass bottles. The bread there is delicious & locally baked. Much of the cheese is made with a five mille radius, & Montgomery cheese is made in the village!

Growing our own flowers & foliage for the houses, this includes container grown Christmas Trees that get re-potted each Spring & eventually planted out in the woodlands. Our glasshouses are all non-heated & fleece covered tender plants inside fight for their survival each Winter!

We grow vegetables & fruit seasonally & are happy to leave these as a gift when they are available.

We have our own free range hens & when they are laying well & the eggs are plentiful, we happily leave some in the houses, they are mostly rehomed battery hens, having the time of their lives with us, feeding on as many scraps as we can give them, along with the guinea fowl & peacocks, it is a fight in the orchards!

We compost vegetable waste & ask that you place your scraps in the bin provided, we will collect once you leave, tear open teabags, and we use Grind compostable coffee pods. Place coffee grounds into the Kilner Jars- marked, we use them in the garden beds to feed plants. Place any bird friendly scraps on the bird tables in the gardens.

We use Ecover & Method cleaning products & hand wash soap. The light bulbs are all energy saving. We use wax fire lighters, they are really efficient & do not give off harmful toxic fumes.  Having an open fire is so lovely & atmospheric, our chimneys are all lined & we use sustainable seasoned wood from the estate, once the fire is going really well shut down the vents to get a slower & more effective burn within the stove. Use paper wrapping to start the fire, save any newspapers in the log baskets.

The candles are either homemade using bees wax, or organic locally sourced candles that release negative ions to bind with toxins and purify the air around you. Keep dinner candles in a cool place, then they burn slower! Never leave unattended.

The NEST heating systems are really efficient & radiators all have individual stats on them to regulate room temperature. Many of our windows are original and listed, we cannot secondary glaze them, but blinds & curtains are lined to insulate, & we use draft excluders by doorways, original doors are never well fitting!

Our rubbish bin liners are compostable too. The recycling is collected each week, & we put the containers out for collection, as we know exactly where they have to go to be seen by the council collectors. The land fill bins are now collected once every three weeks.

The laundry is all washed, dried, ironed & aired here on the estate, we use ecover products & line dry the linens. Tumble dryers are rarely used.

The water all comes from natural springs, which produce fresh, clear natural mineralized water which we pass through ultraviolet lights to ensure that any bacterial cultures are eradicated.

Lastly, we produce as much electricity as we can using solar panels, situated high on a hillside in the valley field. With a large bank of Tesla batteries to store that power. We use it wisely & conserve it where possible.

We leave a suggestion book in each home, so that you can add your green ideas to it and we can incorporate them into our practice. We do not mean to overload you with information, we just want to do our bit for the environment in any way we can & thank you hugely in advance for helping us to do that.
